Prominent Ear Correction: A Guide for Families and Adults

What causes prominent ears, when correction is considered and what recovery involves.

Prominent ears are common and entirely harmless, but they can affect self-confidence, especially in children and teenagers. Otoplasty is a well-established procedure to bring the ears closer to the head in a natural way.

What causes prominent ears?

Usually the natural fold of the ear cartilage is underdeveloped, the bowl of the ear is enlarged, or both. Each ear can be different, so the correction is planned individually for each side.

When is the right time?

For children, correction is commonly considered from around school age, when the ear has reached most of its adult size. The child's own wish matters. For adults, there is no age limit.

What does recovery involve?

  • A head bandage for the first few days
  • A soft headband, mainly at night, for several weeks
  • Return to school or office work often after about one week
  • Avoiding contact sports for several weeks
